International tax policies on the agenda
The OECD, UN and the EU are all working on new international tax agreements and treaties. One important question: how far can you go in giving tax incentives to international companies, when you might be structurally hurting another country? This summer, during the Finance for Development conference in Addis Ababa, tax is also high on the agenda. Tax means money and money is needed for development. Last week, the tax experts warmed up in Amsterdam with the Global Tax Policy conference.
Humanitaire crisis in Syrië: ‘Hulp schiet aan alle kanten tekort’
De discussie over het geweld in Syrië concentreerde zich in de Westerse media tot nu toe met name op de vraag: wel of niet militair ingrijpen? Het feit dat er intussen in het land zich een humanitaire ramp voltrekt kreeg relatief veel minder aandacht. Ook het bedrag dat opgehaald is tijdens inzamelingsacties van giro 555- tot nu toe zo’n 5 miljoen euro- is bedroevend laag ten opzichte van de 200 miljoen die ten tijde van de aardbeving en de tsunami in Azië in 2004 ingezameld werd. Hoe komt het dat de compassie voor de humanitaire crisis zo lang op zich heeft laten wachten?
