
Seminar: The contribution of education to peace and security

Introduction
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNICEF and Save the Children organize a seminar on the theme of the contribution of education to peace and security. The Dutch Cabinet sees a role for education in furthering peace and security in fragile states. What contribution can education make? UNICEF and Save the Children will present examples of approaches that can be taken in practice both in a global programme and at the country level.

13.35h. – Education as a Path to Peace. Experiences with the Education in Emergencies and Post Crisis Transition Programme and a look into the PEACE programme proposal. Presentation by Susan Durston, Global Associate Director of Education, UNICEF. Followed by discussion.
14.25h. – Education as a Mean to Stability in Pakistan, a Programmatic Approach. Presentation by Shahzad Mithani, Director of Education, Save the Children Pakistan, introduced by Fritz Meindert, former Education Expert, Dutch Embassy Islamabad. Followed by discussion.

15.30h. – Education and Peace Building in West Africa:
• introduction by Louise Anten about the Peace Building Fund
• presentation by Mario Novelli, University of Sussex, about preliminary results of a study into Education and Peacebuilding in Sierra Leone
• presentation by Isabel Crowley, Representative UNICEF Liberia, about Education and Peacebuilding in Liberia
Followed by discussion.
