Background
The debate on the effectiveness of international development and social enterprises and the demand for greater accountability is in full swing. In the development sector, we are looking for new tools, new approaches and new perspectives to help us meet this challenge.
Why Social Return on Investment?
Social Return on Investment (SROI) is a new, alternative approach to monitoring and evaluation (M&E) which incorporates social, environmental, economic and other values into decision making processes. It reveals the hidden landscape of these values, previously externalised from market values, and puts them in a framework with economic values. This, in turn, creates a new, more holistic perspective on whether a development project or social business is beneficial or profitable. This new perspective can open up new opportunities and form the basis for innovative initiatives that genuinely contribute to positive social change and poverty reduction for all. In this way SROI balances proving and improving.
In the last five years, Context, international cooperation has built up a track record of SROI in the international development sector. Context works with social enterprises in Africa and Asia on a day to day basis to apply the SROI methodology. As part of a collaborative process a Practical Guide on SROI has been developed. In this training course, we will be sharing our experience with SROI, and the Practical Guide will be used as a main reference document.
What is the purpose of the training?
At the end of the training, you will be able to:
- Apply the SROI methodology in the sector of international cooperation;
- Produce your own SROI report to demonstrate the added and hidden values of your initiative;
- Position SROI within the field of M&E and in relation to different valuation methodologies, social business, value chains and pro-poor market development or inclusive markets.
