“After Copenhagen and Cancun: What Hope for the Durban Climate Conference?”
Op vrijdag 18 maart 2011 organiseren SID Nederland, het Institute of Social Studies (ISS) van de Erasmus universiteit en the Transnational Institute de lezing: “After Copenhagen and Cancun: What Hope for the Durban Climate Conference?”
Lecture and Debate with Praful Bidwai on the hopes for the Durban Climate Conference
Praful Bidwai, acclaimed journalist, academic and activist, will speak on the hopes for the Durban Climate Conference to achieve a decisive and just deal on climate change. The need for such a deal is as pressing as ever. The Copenhagen summit was a disaster which failed to reach a United Nations recognised agreement. Cancun was billed as more successful, but failed to impose legally binding emissions-reduction targets on the developed North. The Kyoto Protocol, the world’s sole legally binding agreement, which accepts differentiated North-South climate responsibility, is on life support. Will Durban prove to be more productive? Much depends on whether key European Union states and pivotal Southern countries can seize the initiative and drive a bargain which preserves the healthy elements of past agreements while setting ambitious targets for an effective, equitable climate deal.
