Het Afrika Studiecentrum heeft een shortlist samengesteld van acht inzendingen die nog in de race zijn voor de Africa Thesis Award. De prijs voor de beste masterscriptie over Afrika wordt op 2 november uitgereikt.

De Africa Thesis Award bestaat sinds 2003 en is bedoeld voor studenten die een masterscriptie over een Afrikaans onderzoek hebben ingediend aan een universiteit in Nederland of in Afrika.

‘Het doel is het stimuleren en onder de aandacht brengen van Afrika-onderzoek op masterniveau’, zegt Marieke van Winden van het Afrika Studiecentrum (ASC). De winnende scriptie wordt door het ASC uitgegeven.

De volgende inzendingen zijn nog in de race:

• VIvian Huygen “Citizen Participation in Services’ Upgrading in Kumasi, Ghana. Exploring the Motivations of Residents of Four Low-Income Areas to Participate & The Impact of Social Capital, Collective Identities and the Leadership Environment”
• Anneke van der Niet “Bodies in action. The influence of culture on body movements and skills in football and mundane daily life in post conflict Sierra Leone”
• Iva Pesa “Cinderella’s cassava: A historical study of agricultural adaptation in Mwinilunga district from precolonial times to Independence”
• Caroline Seagle “Biodiversity for whom? Local experiences and global strategies of land use and access near the Rio Tinto/QMM ilmenite mine in Fort Dauphin, Southeast Madagascar”
• James Simpson “Boipatong: The Politics of a Massacre and the South African Transition”

• Michal Singer “Changing conceptions of South African coal-based pollution, with special reference to the Witbank coalfield, 1906-1978 “
